Singing Mountain Clan

The Last Jedi

The Singing Mountain Clan is a Dathomiri community whose authority over the territory surrounding the ruined Star Temple makes it more than a local power: it is the place’s acknowledged guardian and the gatekeeper to Jax Pavan’s attempt to understand a dangerous connection between the ruin and a Sith Holocron. Its leadership, territorial claim, and conditional hospitality shape Jax’s passage through the clan’s lands, while a later act of trust makes the clan central to his effort to return from the dark knowledge he has acquired.

Territory and Community

The clan’s capital stands in the lap of a major peak in the range from which it takes its name. Its walled township spreads along the mountain’s lower slopes, its avenues bounded by sparse forest. The setting establishes a community with a defined home and a guarded approach: Jax brings his Delta-7 Aethersprite down on a flat table of rock beyond the township gates, rather than landing within the settlement. He steps from the cockpit into the chill mountain air and finds half a dozen female warriors waiting in full view. Their presence makes clear that an outsider’s arrival is noticed and that the settlement is prepared to meet it.

The clan’s territorial claim extends beyond its capital. Jax identifies it as the group that claims the land above the devastated high plain where the Star Temple once stood. The wider Dathomiri landscape contains other clans, including the Nightsisters and groups rumored to reject the matriarchal hierarchy of the female-dominated communities. Jax considers whether those more egalitarian groups might be more receptive to an outsider, but doubts that either could give him what he needs: access to the ruins. His decision to approach the Singing Mountain Clan therefore follows from its specific custodianship, not simply from its proximity or willingness to receive visitors.

Authority and Access to the Ruins

The clan’s authority is represented by Augwynne Djo, its Clan Mother. When Jax is inside the roundhouse, Augwynne maintains a Force connection with him as she considers his request. She does not treat access to the ruin as an ordinary favor that any visitor may claim. She states that no other clan can grant it because the Singing Mountain Clan is the ruin’s guardian. The statement defines the clan’s political standing through its responsibility for a place that Jax cannot reach through another local authority.

Augwynne ultimately permits Jax to visit, but attaches a condition: he must have one of the Sisterhood with him. Permission is thus neither an unrestricted welcome nor a complete refusal. The requirement preserves the clan’s presence and oversight during his visit while still allowing him to pursue his purpose. Jax accepts the condition and thanks the Clan Mother. The exchange shows Augwynne exercising practical authority over access, while Jax’s willingness to leave if refused makes the decision hers rather than an outcome he attempts to force.

Jax Pavan and the Sith Holocron

The reason Jax seeks the clan is bound up with the Star Temple’s remains and the Sith Holocron he carries. As he flies over the ruin dominating the Infinity Plain, the object, tucked into the pocket of his surcoat, resonates with the decaying energies of the site. The response alerts him that the field of slag and rocky debris still holds residual power. This encounter gives the clan’s guardianship immediate significance: Jax is approaching a place that remains potent, not merely surveying an empty historical ruin, and the object he brings may be implicated in what he finds there.

Later, Jax tells Augwynne and Magash that he cannot claim to know what he may be able to do with the knowledge he has gained. He is, however, certain that Darth Vader might misuse it. He asks to leave the Sith Holocron with the clan, expressing confidence that its members will neither use it for ill nor allow it to fall to the forces of the dark side. Augwynne accepts the request. The clan’s role has now expanded from controlling entry to accepting responsibility for safeguarding a dangerous object. Jax does not present this as a casual deposit: he entrusts the Holocron to the women whose authority over the ruin he had earlier acknowledged.

A Promise Kept and a Future Connection

Jax makes his request conditional on surviving his attempt to rescue his friend. If he does, he wants the clan to purge Darth Ramage’s knowledge from his mind, so that neither Darth Vader nor Jax himself can misuse it. The request links the clan’s custodianship of a physical place and object to a more intimate form of protection: the removal of knowledge lodged in a person’s memory. The account does not depict the clan as simply erasing every recollection. After the later visit, Jax still remembers the events at Kantaros Station, but cannot recall how he influenced them; his grasp of time currents is gone, although he retains the concept that they exist, and the remaining ideas have faded almost to transparency.

The later epilogue confirms that the stop on Dathomir is brief but consequential. Augwynne keeps her promise to relieve Jax of Darth Ramage’s dark knowledge. Jax’s decision to trust a Dathomiri Witch to restore balance to his mind is itself described as a step back into the light, giving the clan a role in his moral as well as practical recovery. His return also turns the earlier agreement into a continuing relationship: he says he has an appointment to keep, and then follows through on it.

Afterward, Jax plans to send a message to someone in the Singing Mountain Clan whom he sees as possessing potential and an open mind. He connects that intended contact to the need to rebuild the Jedi Order, reasoning that if he is the last Jedi, the responsibility falls to him. The text does not establish that the prospective student is recruited or that the clan formally joins this effort. It does, however, make the clan a possible point of connection between Jax’s surviving Jedi purpose and a future generation. Across the story, the Singing Mountain Clan’s narrative importance therefore rests on a sequence of concrete acts: guarding the ruin, granting supervised access, receiving the Holocron, honoring a promise, and remaining in view as Jax considers how the Jedi might be rebuilt.
